World class facilities

Our research facilities rival those of leading Earth, atmospheric and environmental research institutions worldwide. Capabilities cover all aspects of field, laboratory and theoretical (computer modeling) investigations, with equipment ranging from aircraft for atmospheric studies, to electron microscopes, microprobes and spectrometers for mineralogical and geochemical investigations, and to high performance computers for modeling and simulation.

Our research covers a wide range of topics in atmospheric physics and chemistry, covering clouds and aerosols, radiative transfer, atmospheric pollution and atmospheric dynamics.

Basin Studies and Petroleum Geoscience

Our research incorporates all aspects of the coupled sedimentary basin - landscape system, from source to sink and from micro- to macro-scales.

Isotope Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry

The group is bound together by a common theme of using isotopic techniques to address key science problems in the Earth, environmental and planetary Sciences.

 

Environmental Biochemistry and Geomicrobiology

Environmental Geochemistry and Geomicrobiology

Our research focuses on the characterization of mineral-water-organic matter reactions in surface and subsurface environments. By combining the techniques of microbiology and molecular biology with physical, chemical and modelling approaches, we are identifying the role that microorganisms play in key environmental processes.

Physics and Chemistry of Minerals and Fluids

The group studies the structures, properties and stabilities of minerals and fluids in order to explain why particular structures develop, the conditions that are required and the mechanisms involved.

 

Structural and Petrological Geoscience

Structural and Petrological Geoscience

Research under the Structural and Petrological Geoscience theme covers many aspects of petrology, structural and tectonic geology in the field and in the laboratory. There is particular emphasis on experimental studies of phase equilibria at high pressures and temperatures (such as occur in subduction zones) and experimental studies of rock deformation and petrophysical properties over the entire range of crustal conditions.

Palaeontology

Vertebrate palaeontology research in the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences has been focused on applying new techniques to some very old problems. A multidisciplinary approach has yielded several new and fruitful avenues of research.
