Hannah Beattie
BSc Geology
Hannah Beattie is from Cumbria where she studied for A Levels in Geology, Geography and Environmental Science. She is currently in the 3rd year of a BSc Geology degree at the University of Manchester.
My favourite part of the course has definitely been the field work aspect of the degree. Since the first year I have been on field trips to Devon, The South of France, Glen Coe and Pembrokeshire. One of the best experiences I have had was during the summer of my second year when I spent 7 weeks in Southeast Spain, where I worked on my Independent Mapping Project.
As a result of all the field work and practical classes the course is very sociable with a great sense of camaraderie amongst the students. I have made many great friends on the course, even living with course mates in my final year of study.
Out of all of the modules I have studied at University I took most interest in energy resources, particularly enjoying the analysis of seismic sections of subsurface structures. Following up on this interest I have secured a summer internship with B.P, starting as soon as I have finished my studies. The petroleum industries are very much relevant in today’s society affecting global politics and economics, as well as producing a commodity vital to the worlds developed infrastructures. I am really looking forward to being a part of this, taking what I have learnt at University into an exciting and dynamic working environment.
I know anyone coming to study Geology here at the University of Manchester is going to have an incredible experience. From the city’s huge diversity to the fantastic field trips available there’s definitely plenty of fun to be had here at Manchester!
