Why do fieldwork?

Fieldwork in the South of France
Students taking notes in Barreme, Southern France on a recent field trip.

Field work forms an integral part of all our degrees in geological and environmental sciences, allowing integration of the skills learnt from lectures and laboratory classes. You will develop skills of observation and interpretation as well as techniques for investigating specific areas. All students within the School carry-out field work, varying from one day look-see courses, to longer taught courses investigating specific areas or learning particular techniques, to independent field work undertaken as part of the third year dissertation or project. Most field courses are residential allowing you to socialise with your fellow students and the staff. Field courses are an essential part of obtaining accreditation of the geology degrees with the Geological Society of London. Details of the field work programme associated with each degree can be found at this link.

...with fieldtrips to places like the French Alps and Southern Spain there's a real opportunity to make great friends and have a laugh whilst learning.
