Fieldwork costs
The School has a commitment to heavily subsidise all compulsory field courses. We do not charge students for travel and accommodation on compulsory taught field courses run by the school. Where accommodation on courses is organised with breakfast and evening meals included, students will be asked to contribute to these costs (£15 a day would be a guide price).
Geology students are required to undertake a five week independent field mapping project and while the School provides a small subsidy (typically £100), students need to ensure they have sufficient funds to cover the costs. These vary depending on where students choose to go, UK or overseas, and what sort of accommodation is used, camping or hired apartments, on average students spend around £700 in total.
Students on all other degree programmes also have all compulsory fieldwork heavily subsidised and again where accommodation on courses is organised with breakfast and evening meals included, students will be asked to contribute to these costs (£15 a day would be a guide price). Students on Environmental and Geography and Geology programmes may chose to undertake optional additional field courses run by Life Sciences or Geography or may choose an independent project involving field study, in these circumstances students would be expect to meet their own field expenses.
Equipment
For field courses, students need to ensure that they have good quality water-proof clothing and walking boots. Wellingtons may be required on some environmental field courses but are not suitable for most areas. A day sack is also required.
Some specialist equipment is required for field courses and this is available from the school at cost during registration in the 1st year:
