Group members have been active in promoting and developing the mineral sciences in various ways. Drs Wogelius and Warren have both served on the Council of the Mineralogical Society, and the former was instrumental in establishing the Environmental Mineralogy Group of that Society. Professor Vaughan is serving as the first Chair of a new International Mineralogical Association Environmental Mineralogy and Geochemistry Working Group. Both Vaughan and Wogelius are currently editors of the journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta and Wogelius also of the journal Chemical Geology. Invited lectures have included those to the Mineralogical Society (Pattrick, Wogelius), Goldschmidt Conferences (Vaughan, Wogelius), International Clay Conference, Japan (Wogelius)
In 2006, Professor Vaughan was awarded the Sclumberger Medal of the Mineralogical Society and the Geochemistry award of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
