Safety Issues in the Geomicrobiology Laboratory
Biological safety assessments
Before starting work in B26, discuss the proposed project with the Departmental Biological Safety Officer (Dr Lloyd). If the project is new, or deviates significantly from a previous work plan, then a new "Application to Handle Biological Agents" form will have to be completed. This is especially true when an approved biological agent is to be changed in such a way that the risk to safety might be increased. If genetically modified organisms are to be used, then an additional "Application to Work with Genetically Modified Organisms" form will have to be completed and approved prior to starting experimental work. Please note, COSHH forms should also be completed for all chemicals and procedures.

Housekeeping rules (Lab B26)
Once the appropriate forms have been completed and approved, you can start work. The Geomicrobiology Laboratory is a shared facility, so please respect the following housekeeping rules.
- All outdoor clothing and belongings must be stored in outside lockers. See Dr Lloyd for a key.
- Laboratory coats must be worn in lab B26 at all times. Please bring your own lab coat; "bacteriological" high neck fastening type preferred. Other appropriate safety equipment can be supplied e.g. safety spectacles and a range of gloves.
- Please no mouth pipetting or pencil/pen chewing!
- Label all glassware/disposables with name, date, biological agent.
- Clean all spills with 2% aqueous solution of Virkon. Please keep common areas clean, especially around the balance/pH meter.
- Autoclave all liquid waste containing biological agents prior to disposal to the sink. A pressure cooker is designated for this purpose. Contaminated solid waste must be placed in appropriate biohazard bags for autoclaving and disposal via Biological Sciences.
- Sharps should be disposed of in one of the designated "Sharpsafes" provided. Ethidium Bromide Gels should be placed in the separately labeled "Sharpsafe" in the toxics cabinet prior to disposal via Biological Sciences.
- A constant temperature room is available for use, and will normally be kept at 10-12°C. Please turn off the lights when you have finished in the constant temperature room; many ongoing sediment experiments are light sensitive.
- Before leaving B26 wash your hands using the antibacterial soap provided, and hang your lab coat by the door.
- Please notify Dr Lloyd if you need to work outside normal hours.
