Equipment and facilities
Please click the apppropriate link for more information on the analytical techniques and equipment we have available in the department
ICP-MS Instrument
The instrument is housed in The Department of Earth Sciences in a class 1000 cleanroom. Click here for more information.
ICP-AES Instrument
Analysis of a wide range of elements (list available) in solution, sequentially. Detection limits vary from element to element and depend upon method, nature of sample and standards used. Click here for more information.
Ion Chromatography
Determination of inorganic and organic anions in aqueous samples, mostly natural waters. Click here for more information.
Thermal analysis
Mass and energy changes within a sample can be measured as a function of temperature / time using the Differential Scanning Calorimeter/Thermogravimetry (DSC/TG) instrument. Click here for more information.
Total Organic Carbon Analyser
Dissolved Carbon Analyser is used to measure dissolved carbon in water samples. Total Carbon and Inorganic Carbon can be determined. Click here for more information.
Chemistry Laboratory Facilities
Facilities for sample preparation and analytical method development available to both undergraduate and postgraduates. Click here for more information.
Environmental Science Laboratory
This laboratory houses centrifuges, freeze dryers, incubators, ovens, water baths and the Clay Mineral Studies Unit. Click here for more information.
XRF Instrument
X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry is a non-destructive analytical technique used to identify and determine the concentrations of elements present in solid, powdered and liquid samples. Click here for more information.
XRD (X-ray Difraction)
The XRD lab deals with classic geological problems such as soil lithography and mineral phase identification, using two diffractometers, a Philips PW1730 and a Bruker D8Advance. Click here for more information.
Gas Chomatography- Mass spectrometry(GC-MS)
Gas Chomatography- Mass spectrometry(GC-MS). Click here for more information.
Liquid Chromatography Mass spectrometry(LC-MS)
Liquid Chromatography Mass spectrometry(LC-MS). Click here for more information.
